The 4th Regional Summit on Solid Waste Management (SWM) is set on November 18-20, 2009 at the Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center.
This year’s 3-day activity has a theme of “Environmental Education: Our Challenge to Act on Climate Change.’
The first day, November 18th, is the Youth Day where competitions among schools in Iloilo City will be held. These include poem writing or Binalaybay, Komposo, recycling arts and on-the-spot poster making contests which will be held at Robinson’s Place Iloilo. Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Provincial Federation President, Hon. Guisseppe Karl D. Gumban will be the Keynote Speaker.
The next two days, on the other hand, is set for lectures which will be held at the Sarabia Manor Hotel. Some of the topics to be discussed are: Media Landscape on Solid Waste Management in the Urban Centers of Region 6; Importance of Dumpsite Closure for Climate Change Mitigation; Targets, Opportunities and Status of 9512 or the Environmental Education and Awareness Act and its IRR(& introducing November as Environmental Awareness Month); State of Solid Waste Management in Region 6, Challenge on Climate (Copenhagen Presentation) and Solid Waste Management vs. Climate Change.
Winners during the Youth Day competition will be awarded on the evening of November 19th. Media, LGUs and NGOs with promising/best practices on SWM and environmental advocacy will be recognized and the Annual REC Award for Outstanding Environmental Impacts will also be given.
Around 200 delegates is expected to attend this annual summit organized by the Regional Ecology Center and Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Environmental Management Bureau, both by Region 6, and by the German Technical Cooperation’s (GTZ) support program for SWM4LGUS in the Visayas and Mindanao. This activity is also in collaboration with the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers, Inc.-Iloilo Chapter.(PR)
