Here are some photos of the 2011 celebration of Masskara Festival in Bacolod City. Dubbed as one of the country’s most colorful festival, Masskara draws tourists both foreign and local alike every year in its annual grand mardi gras fiesta.

This year’s edition of Masskara was a bit more lively than the previous ones because this time they infused live music of accompanying bands playing for each participating group in the street dance competitions. Although at first personally, I think it was a cool new feature for Masskara but after seeing some videos of its previous versions where taped music is being played to the beat of Samba, I think, that what really defines Masskara as a distinct and unique festival in the Philippines.

Nonetheless, live music undeniably upped the ante of the festivity mood especially during the grand performances at the Plaza. That being said, I think Masskara is slowly becoming more of a “spinoff” of Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival and Sinamba sa Paraw Regatta Mardi Gras in terms of its live drum music and costume sans the masks.

Anyway, here are the photos of the Street Dance competition in the Barangay Category held last Sunday, October 16, 2011.  Barangay Banago bagged the overall championship.
