After 106 years of providing quality education with a Christian environment in Roxas City, Filamer Christian College (FCC) now becomes Filamer Christian University (FCU). The Commission on Higher Education en banc has granted FCC a university status effective July 14, 2010 after sometime of adhering to the standards of the government education body.

By virtue of Resolution No. 186-2010 and in accordance with the pertinent provisions of Republic Act 7722, otherwise known as the Higher Education Act of 1994, FCC was granted a university status under the name Filamer Christian University.

FCU is the first private university in the province of Capiz. The other existing university in the province is the state-ran Capiz State University (CAPSU).

FCU started in 1904 as a home for orphans and poor children, named as the Capiz Home School, under the care of the American Baptist missionaries offering elementary education.

It was raised to the high school level in 1949 and became Filamer Christian Institute in 1952, which name is a combination of Filipino and American in establishing and running the joint venture in Christian education and cooperation.

In 1985 Filamer Christian Institute became officially known as Filamer Christian College and now the Filamer Christian University. FCU is a sister school of Central Philippine University (CPU) in Iloilo City.

This big leap in the improvement of educational institutions in Roxas City and the entire province of Capiz is a great step in upholding the quality of education given to the Capizenos.

One of the most frequented destinations in Roxas City, Capiz is the Dumulog Fish Drying Area. Aside from the fresh seafood in Baybay the city also boasts as one of the top supplier of dried fish all over the country. They even export some of them to other countries.

Blankets of fish being dried under the hit of the sun can be found in Brgy. Dumulog few kilometers away from the city proper. Dumulog is a seaside barangay in this part of the city facing the underdeveloped island haven of Olotayan also part of Roxas City. The main livelihood of the people in this barangay is mainly fishing and fish drying.

Variety of fish that are best sellers when dried can be found here but most of them are seasonal. When we got there, we only saw Tabagak and few others on the Handayan (improvised structure of bamboo where they dry the fish). Usually they are reserved for big buyers that distribute them in the markets. I’m not sure if you can buy some directly from them and if so, surely you’ll get a good bargain.

How to get there:

Tricycle is the main public transportation service in Roxas City. You can ride one to take you to Brgy. Dumulog. Few taxis are also available but they usually prefer passengers for out of town.

Culajao Mangrove Eco-Park in Roxas City, Capiz has the distinction of being a community protected mangrove reserve and the only one within the city. It stretches within 4.69 hectares and home to diverse marine and mangrove species. From the road take a short walk under the shed of mangroves along the way to get to the reception area. Mingle with nature and get a flight out in this world relaxing in nipa huts interconnected with at least 100 meters of thrilling pedestrian suspension bridges. Nipa huts are in different sizes and can host at most 20 persons.

bamboo raft (banca)

They have several packages for tours that include a bamboo raft (banca) ride along the river to get a closer look of the 19 species of mangroves that serve as habitat for a vast variety of fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, and shells. Listen to a live composo about mangroves and Culajao. Watch the herons and other exotic bird species flying around catching fish. A fish cage is also available for hook and line fishing.

However they do not permit visitors to stay overnight or just stay late at night in their cottages/ nipa huts. I think nobody could relax with the deafening noises created by the denizen of different creatures around.

Culajao Mangrove Eco-Park is a 10-15 minute ride away from Roxas City plaza via the new road traversing Brgy. Mongpong and Banica.

There is an entrance fee of P20 for adults, P15 for students and P10 for children.

It is a project of the city government of Roxas in partnership with the Katunggan sa Culajao Salbaron Association (KACUSA), Inc. And PEW Fellows Program in Marine Conservation.

Roxas City in Capiz is popularly known as the seafood capital of the Philippines. With the bounty and abundance of the surrounding bodies of water, Roxas has produced variety of fresh seafood at its best quality and distributed to the rest of the country. Some of those can only be seen in the waters of Capiz including the famous crustaceans such as Diwal (Angel’s wing), Talaba (Oysters), Scallops, Tahong among others.

Baybay beach in Roxas City is the one-stop destination for seafood gourmands to savor the pride of Capiz. It has an array of seafood restaurants that serve nothing but the fresh catch of crustaceans and famous fish favorites such as blue marlin. They have comparably lower prices and they’ll cook your choice of seafood into your liking whether steamed in broth or just simply grilled. Feel the fresh clean sea breeze while dining at Baybay or watch the sun goes down at La Playa de Roxas (People’s Park) nearby before plunging into a dose of seafood fares.

Seafood restaurants in Baybay are open for meals from breakfast ’til dinner.
