The province of Guimaras will once again celebrate its grand annual celebration of Manggahan Festival on April 10 – 17, 2011. Known for its world-class sweet mangoes, Guimaras showcases the best of its crop during the celebration.

Colorful streetdance competitions, agribusiness trade fairs and other exciting activities including the Mangga Eat-All-You-Can highlight the annual event.

Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival 2011 Schedule

Iloilo’s Paraw Regatta Festival, the longest running sailing event in Asia is set on February 13 to 22 next year. Paraw Regatta is a race among local seafarers on festive local sailboats known as Paraws across the Iloilo Strait.

The 39th edition of this sail-boat event is expected to draw tourists both local and foreign to Iloilo as it did in the previous years.

Next’s year’s theme “Philippine Seafaring Tradition Goes Worldwide” which embodies the strongly recognized maritime skills of the Ilonggos worldwide. The city government of Iloilo has already pledged support to Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation, Inc. (IPRFI) the managing body of the festival both in financial and other logistics.

Various events are added every year to complement the festival. Some of the much-awaited side events of Paraw Regatta is the Sinamba de Regatta, a street dancing competition.

The 36.5-kilometer sailboat race has its jump off point at Tatoy’s Manokan in Villa sailing to Sto. Rosario, Buenavista in Guimaras and back to the point of origin.

Miss Western Visayas Tourism 2010 Winners

Miss Dinagyang bagged the most coveted Miss Western Visayas Tourism 2010 crown. The final run and the coronation was held at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center in Lapaz, Iloilo City last November 13, 2010.

Miss Western Visayas Tourism is the most prestigious battle of beauties from all over the region. It consists of the reigning festival queens from all over the 6 provinces and several towns of Western Visayas.

This year’s pageant 9 contestants were: Miss Ibajay Tourism, Julie Ann Dionisio of Aklan Province; Miss Pahinis Festival Queen, Zyra Grace Vedad of Antique Province; Miss Maskara, Agnes Therese Chang of Bacolod City; Miss Halaran, Ivana Isidora Besa of Capiz Province; Mutya Ng Guimaras, Mary Rose Andaluz of Guimaras Province; Miss Paraw Regatta, Pauline Asegurado of Iloilo City; Miss Dinagyang, Angelie Joy Golingay of Iloilo City; Lin-ay Sang Negros, Kareen Ty of Negros Occidental and Binibining Leon Tourism, Nikki Beatingo of Iloilo Province.

Navalas Church the Oldest Structure in Guimaras

Navalas Church in Guimaras is considered to be the oldest structure in this island. Built in 1880 Navalas Church also known as San Isidro Labrador Church in Barangay Navalas the municipality of Buenavista has been the oldest seat of the Catholicism in this island and the product of community labor and unity.

Navalas Church is made of coral rocks abundant in the area during the construction of this edifice. Don Miguel Jayme who has contributed much to the construction with Doña Carmen Javellana donated the piece of land where the Church lies.

It is fenced with old stone structures and has a watchtower that serves as the entrance gate. The watchtower was used to guard the Church from the Moro intruders. This structure also is the belfry of the church that once held a big bell made of an alloy of silver and gold. The history tells that Muslims once raided Navalas and took away the bell but threw it at the middle of the sea near the Siete Pecados Islands because it was too heavy. That bell played a major role and served as the warning device for the impending intruders’ attack as it can be heard even up to the town of Dumangas across the Iloilo Strait.

How to Get There:

Iloilo is the gateway to Guimaras. From Parola Port in Iloilo it is a 15-minute boat ride to McArthur’s Wharf in Buenavista, Guimaras. Upon getting there, you can directly go to the Tourist Assistance Center within the wharf compound and they will assist you on how to get to Navalas Church.

Just few minutes away from Navalas Church is another heritage attraction of Guimaras, Roca Encantada.

Guimaras Mangoes the Sweetest in the World

Guimaras an island province in Western Visayas is blessed with so many natural resources. Pristine white beaches and beautiful islets surround this island that was once a sub-province of Iloilo. Scenic greeneries dominate the panoramic view of Guimaras and these are composed mostly of mango plantations.

It has been claimed that the sweetest mangoes in the world can be found in Guimaras. True enough this province has been exporting mangoes and by-products to different parts of the world. Some experts said that mangoes in Guimaras are sweet as a result of its naturally cultivated type of land very suitable for mango farming. As a precautionary measure the local government of Guimaras prohibits the entries of mangoes from outside the province to its territories to avoid cross breeding into their own seedlings.

Mangoes are widely sold in different parts of the island at a cheaper price of course. Most of the mango stalls are located at the Alibhon market (Guimaras’ main trading market) in the town of Jordan the province’s capital. There are also a lot of products that are made of mangoes being sold there such as dried mangos, mango ketchup, mangga piaya and many more.

The best time of the year to visit Guimaras is during their Manggahan Festival held in April. Mangoes and other Guimaras’ products are on a week-long one stop trade fair at the Capitol grounds.

Some of the major highlights during this year’s edition is the Performances of different festivals of each town in Guimaras, the trade fair and the Mangga Eat-All-You-Can. Each town in this island province showcased their history and culture through their performances.

Iloilo Airport: Gateway to Western Visayas

The Iloilo Airport (IATA: ILO, ICAO: RPVI) is one of the major gateways to Panay Island and the rest of Western Visayas. Officially named Iloilo International Airport after it has been chosen between Panay International Airport and Graciano Lopez-Jaena International Airport as proposed. Although it is not yet serving international flights, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines classified it to be with the international standards. It has been inaugurated on June 13, 2007 as a replacement to the century-old Iloilo Airport in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Located in the borders of Cabatuan and Sta. Barbara towns, Iloilo Airport is some 19 km northwest of Iloilo City or approximately a 30-minute drive. It lies on a 188-hectare site in Barangay Duyan-Duyan, split between the municipalities of Cabatuan, where the airport proper is located, and Santa Barbara, where the airport entrance and access road are located. It boosts to have one of the most modern facilities in the country today and ready to serve international flights sooner. Furthermore, it inherited the spot of the old Airport in Mandurriao as the 4th busiest airport in the Philippines after Ninoy Aquino International Airport – Metro Manila, Mactan-Cebu International Airport – Cebu and Francisco Bangoy International Airport – Davao.

Currently there are at least five airlines servicing the flights from Iloilo to Manila, Cebu and Davao vice versa; namely, Cebu Pacific Air, Air Philippines, Philippine Airlines, Zest Air and PAL Express (operated by Air Phil). The airport is presently serving the travelers from the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras and Antique.

How to get there:

The Iloilo International Airport is a 30-minute drive away from Iloilo City through a wide and smoothly paved highways traversing the towns of Pavia and Sta. Barbara. Guimaras Manggahan Festival 2010 Schedule

Guimaras will once again stage their annual celebration of the Manggahan Festival. This is the biggest fiesta in the whole island that highlights the province’s best and world class fruit, Manga (Mango). It has been said that Guimaras Mango is the sweetest in the world only found in this island province.

This year’s edition is focused on the theme “Sustainable Agri-Eco Tourism: through Community-based Approach”. The two-week celebration is set on April 5th until the 18th this year with activities mostly held at the Capitol Grounds in San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras. Join Guimarasnons in there celebration and thanksgiving, enjoy the colorful street dance competitions and indulge yourself in the Manga Eat-All-You-Can during this event.

Semana Santa sa Iloilo kag Guimaras 2010

The Holy Week celebration in the provinces of Iloilo and Guimaras has been one of its tourism promotions for four years now dubbed “Semana Santa sa Iloilo kag Guimaras” or SESIG. The Iloilo City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO) prepared various activities for the Holy Week 2010 for the visitors and locals in a joint undertaking with the tourism-oriented businesses in the city.

This year’s theme is “Holy Week in My Mind”, which City Tourism Officer Benito Jimena explains is “(the) things (that) come first to your mind when you think about holy week.”

The SESIG project offers exciting activities that can entice Ilonggos and visitors to celebrate Lent without taking for granted the religiosity of it.

Below are the summary of the scheduled events for the Holy Week 2010, “Semana Santa sa Iloilo kag Guimaras”.

March 22, 2010 – Start of photo exhibits at SM City Iloilo – a showcase of Ilonggo culture and tradition during the Lenten season.
April 1 – 2, 2010 – “Capiya” exhibits in Santa Barbara feature fourteen small chapels in the intersections of the town where picturesque tableaus of the “Via Cruces” (Way of the Cross) are located.
March 29 – April 2, 2010 – Stations of the Cross in Balaan Bukid in Guimaras and all Catholic churches.
April 1, 2010 – The Last Supper and Washing of Feet of the Apostles re-enactment in all towns.
March 29 – April 3, 2010 – “Visita Iglesia” or tour of different churches in the city and province.
April 2, 2010 – A Good Friday procession in Leganes with the 26 life-sized images.

- “Ang Pagtaltal sa Bala-an Bukid”, in Jordan, Guimaras the local rendition of the Passion of Christ.

April 4, 2010 – Leganes “Salubongan” on Easter Sunday presenting the encounter between Jesus Christ and Mother Mary after His resurrection.

- All other churches have “Resplendor” or the angel’s curse of Judas.

March 27, 2010 – “palaspas”-making contest (Palm Making), SM City Iloilo
March 29, 2010 – Poetry Reading, SM City Iloilo

- “Sambuwa sang Pasyonista”- “Pasyon,” Rendition Contest – a traditional composition detailing the sufferings of Christ.

March 28 – April 4, 2010 – “Palapak” where a small statue of Saint Vincent Ferrer is pressed on the head of a devotee hoping for a miraculous cure from only winged saint.
March 30, 2010 – essay writing, spot drawing/painting at the Freedom Grandstand.

Retreats can be conducted in the Trappist Monastery in Guimaras and the Gethsemane Garden in Leganes, Iloilo.

Also there will be a month-long Lenten culinary treats offered by members of the Iloilo Hotel Resort and Restaurant Association (IHRRA) while the Iloilo Convention and Visitors Bureau (ICVB) member hotels will offer 50% discount in their room rates from March 28 to April 4, 2010. (Source: PIO)

Balaan Bukid in Jordan, Guimaras

Guimaras is a destination in Western Visayas during the Lenten season specially for the Catholic pilgrims. It boosts with its annual Ang Pagtaltal sa Guimaras celebration on Good Fridays that leads to the so called Balaan Bukid. Balaan Bukid (Holy Mountain) is a 45-minutes trek from the foot of the mountain in Brgy Hoskyn some 3 kilometers away from the town proper of Jordan, Guimaras. Rocky and steep trails that lead to the peak of the mountain gives the Catholic fanatics a true meaning of “sacrifice” in this season of the year and a real thrill to the backpackers.

Along the way, you get to see the 14 stations depicting the sacrifices in the life of Jesus. Upon reaching the summit you will be greeted by the panoramic view of Iloilo City from across the Iloilo Strait and the scenic view of the entire province of Guimaras on the other side. The gigantic cross greets the trekkers that marks the shrine of Ave Maria Purisima, a small chapel atop the holy mountain.

Expect herds of people during the Holy Week joining the Ang Pagtaltal, the local version of the Passion of Christ.There are no restrictions in trekking the Balaan Bukid even on regular days and there are no fees or something upon getting there but there are donation boxes within the shrine if you have a kind heart to give. Benches in the shed of the tress are surrounding the shrine where you can relax while enjoying the scenic views and cool breeze.

The giant cross in Balaan Bukid is visibly seen from Iloilo City, and hence served as a popular landmark of Guimaras.

Pumpboats are regularly plying Jordan, Guimaras-Iloilo City routes and vice versa from the Ortiz Wharf in Iloilo City. After a tiring trek at Balaan Bukid you can proceed to the white beaches of Guimaras to regenerate.
