In the recently ended groundbreaking of the Secondary Access Road to Iloilo Airport, DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza announced that international flights will be coming soon in Iloilo. He said that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered to establish an international desk which will be administered by the Customs Immigration and Quarantine.
“Darating na ang international flights,” said Mendoza as he emphasized that Iloilo International Airport had already been declared as an international destination.
Cebu-Pacific will launch its Iloilo-Hongkong flights, together with the Korean Airlines which will mount Korea-Iloilo flights. The new Iloilo Airport facility can accommodate aircraft as large as the Airbus A330.

This is really a good news not only for Iloilo but for the rest of the region. Currently there are only two airports in Western Visayas serving international flights, Godofredo P. Ramos Airport in Caticlan, Malay, Aklan and the Kalibo International Airport. With this, the new Iloilo Airport of International Standard will definitely serve its purpose. It would be easier for Ilonggos to travel out of the country especially to the current proposed destinations. It will bolster the economy as well, because of the direct accessibility of Iloilo to the world we can have better transactions with the international businesses. Envisioned also that the surrounding industrial zones of the airport will be converted to economic zones sooner. We will expect more international destinations plying thru the new Iloilo International Airport.
