Porma Balas 2012: The Iloilo Sand Sculpture Competition
Porma Balas, a Sand Sculpture Competition will once again happen this summer in Iloilo City.
Started in 1994, Porma Balas has became one of the longest running event held during summer along Villa Beach and a pioneer in such kind of event in the country.
This year’s edition is happening Sunday, April 29, 2012 in front of Breakthrough Seafood Restaurant in Villa. The gray beach sand along the shore of Villa is turned into a sculpting material and the beach, turned into a gallery of art masterpieces. Local artists and design enthusiasts gather to try their best in creating intricate carvings using only the sand.
Porma Balas aims to make sand sculpturing as an art and hobby among Ilonggos and promote as one of the tourism attractions during summer. It also aims to impart to the Ilonggos the importance of environmental protection most specifically preserving and protecting the once famous Villa shoreline.
A Flatsand Skim Competition and Skim Clinic will also be held simultaneously with Porma Balas 2012 in Villa.
Porma Balas is organized by the Rotaract Club of Iloilo City with the support of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region VI, Rotary Club of Iloilo City, Breakthrough Restaurant and ABS-CBN TV10 Iloilo.
