Another discovery I had last night was the lounge in the rooftop of the ‘original’ Smallville complex in Mandurriao here in Iloilo. The Rooftop Brewery – Beers from around the World that recently opened under the ownership of the Freska Seafood Restaurant underneath.

Literally it is located on the roofdeck of the newly constructed al fresco and it is actually the first Beer Bar here in Iloilo. Enjoy from their exclusive selection of your favorite beers from different countries all around the world. Indulge from the choices of the Dutch beer Heineken, Budweiser, Mexican Corona, The Pink Killer (tastes like a Red Horse with blend of Strawberry) from Belgium and many more both the pale lagers and the ale types of beers. Beer was acclaimed to be the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage and we can’t deny that we Filipinos are one of the highest consumers of it.

Imbibe every beer that exists in this world, at the Rooftop Brewery you can keep that beery-belly in a perfect shape.

Don’t know what beer to order? Just come along they  actually have friendly and knowledgeable waiters that can help you out in finding the perfect beer that fits you. Interestingly, they open the bottle right in front of you as they say you must not miss smelling the aroma that comes out from it as opened (they also pour in the first glass for you).

Of course the famous Philippine beers can never be out of the seen. And Fresca is known for its low priced beers with its signatured “Beer Balloon”. Also you still get to enjoy the sumptuous food of Fresca right there at the al fresco while enjoying a bottle of beer perfect with cozy sofas and dining tables.

The skyline of Mandurriao area in Iloilo City is currently taking into shape with the sprouting mid-rises. Currently, the proposed 8-storey hotel in Smallville is about to wrap up with the pile driving and the foundation in which any moment the actual construction will commence. Aptly called the Smallville 21 Hotel, the establishment is expected to add to the array of best hotels in Iloilo City. It is owned by the 21 group that also manages the Hi-way 21 and Century 21 Hotels and the Club21 Bar also in Smallville. It has positioned itself right at the center of the night hotspot of Iloilo and is expected to also have bars and restos in its ground level. This proposed building is located right beside the Pirates Bar and in front of The Avenue strip.

At the back of the proposed hotel is an ongoing construction also of a proposed 2-storey commercial strip. And right across, beside the church is another 3-storey building that complements the ongoing developments in Smallville.

With the upcoming developments of Megaworld, Ayala Land and the new Ateneo de Iloilo campus, surely this area will boost the economy of Iloilo and will be the scene of midrises in Iloilo.

Last Saturday I joined other 3 fellow bloggers in a luncheon courtesy of Bourbon Street.  Bourbon Street is an American Bistro in Iloilo that serves scrumptious American favorites. It is located along the strips of the night spot center of Iloilo, Smallville Complex in Mandurriao. They had been listed in the recent compilation of Philippine Tatler as one of the best restaurants in the Philippines in terms of service, food and price along with other two Iloilo Italian specialty restaurants, Amalfi Cucina Italiana and Al Dente Restorante.

During the tiffin of four we got the choice to order whichever we desire in the menu, as I thought we will be served with what they have prepared for us. Then on, we decided to order and have a taste test of Original Buffalo wings, House Special Pizza, Grilled Chicken Pesto pasta and a 15-hour Pork Belly, but unfortunately it was not available, instead the server suggested to have their special treat of the day, the Snapper Florentine.  Of course the meal would not be completed without savoring Bourbon Street’s famous racks of Ribs which is the specialty of the house. The Buffalo wings are just awesome and it tasted so well, dipped in a special sauce mix. The House Special Pizza is a must try with premium toppings of spicy beef, andouille sausage, olives, mushrooms and capers. The Grilled Chicken  pasta in Pesto is also good. The snapper is one of the best in the table; Braised Snapper with Shellfish Cream Sauce, really scrumptious that won a nod from us. Fetching up the meal we indulged in the mouthwatering grilled tender pork ribs served with a bold Bourbon BBQ Sauce and really, it did not disappoint us. Overall, the meal was quiet heavy but we still have ordered desserts. So we feasted on the Million Layer Cake or the so called Millionaires Pouch, flambé of apples and oranges wrapped in Phyllo pastry served with vanilla ice cream. We also tasted the Walnut Turtle Pie which is a gooey caramel on cookie crust with chocolate and walnuts. To wrap up the junket I settled with my Mango Shake while the others had iced tea.

Before all the eating happened we had deferred our cravings for the delectable grubs on the table as we could not resist coddling in taking photos. They were all picture-perfect that took us almost an hour for the picture taking and left the food in a colder state. But still we did enjoy so much the food, the place and the company of each other that served as an avenue for us to hang out with the accommodation of Bourbon Street.

When in Iloilo you must try the food at Bourbon Street, they are really worth trying and for sure would keep you coming back for more. Enjoy the best dining experience in an airconditioned setting or in an alfresco. Have the best party at night in its bar beneath the resto with popular guest DJs to set your mode while you savor the finest wines and bevarages Bourbon Street has to offer.

Recently several food chains, coffee shops, bar and restaurants both local and international have made their way in branching out here in Iloilo. The food and beverage industry here is very alive that enticed those chains to open doors here. The newest additions spread all over Smallville, SM City and other key locations in the city. Here is a list and quick details for you to refer.

ALREADY OPENED

Bluejay Coffee and Deli. The hip and chic new coffee resto at Amigo Mall. They have opened quite sometime already but just a round up I’ll include them in this list. They have currently 3 braches icluding this newly opened and most cozy addition. Branches at Smallville, Gen. Luna (near Times Square) and Amigo Plaza Mall.

Joey Pepperoni Pizzeria. It is a casual restaurant that specializes in its distinctive take on contemporary Italian-American cuisine. I think this is their first branch outside Metro Manila. They are located at the Corner M.H. del Pilar St and Diversion Road, Molo just beneath the Infante flyover occupying the old recruitment center of CallBox beside Ted’s Batchoy fronting Jollibee Gen. Kopi Roti. It is a coffee company that started in Singapore and has conquered the Philippine coffee market several years ago. It serves a distinctively tasty coffee and tea prepared in a singaporean way. In Iloilo you can find them at the Smallville Complex in Diversion Road, Mandurriao, Iloilo City inline with Bluejays. Afriques Smallville, Iloilo City

Afriques. This restaurant is a true pride of Iloilo. This is a testimony of how magnificent and diverse the Ilonggo cuisine is. They serve gourmet pizza, pasta and more. They have four (4) branches all over the city; Jaro (behind Jaro Cathedral), Molo (M.H. del Pilar St., fronting La Fiesta Hotel), Gen Hughes (Near Plaza Libertad going to Fort San Pedro) and the newest addition is in Smallville Complex in Mandurriao.

Cilantro Bar and Restaurant. This bar will be located at The Avenue in Smallville Complex Mandurriao fronting the well acclaimed Amalfi Cucina Italiana. Cilantro is a Mexican inspired resto bar and a disco bar at the second floor. They will have their soft launching on September 5, 2009 with guest DJ from Metro Manila.

Dulcinea. It is a middle class dining that especializes in Spanish cuisine, cakes and pastries. They are famous in their Churros con Choco, Paella Valencia, Tuhod Y Ajillo, Salpicao, Lengua Estofado, and Tortilla Riojana. They will be opening this September or October at SM City Iloilo in the then Pancake House.

Coffee Break Gourmet Cafe. Coffee Break coffee chain, a proud Ilonggo is opening another yet new venture in the coffee and pastry industry. Opening soon in SM City Iloilo located in between Red Ribbon Bakeshop and the Soon To Open Dulcinea.

Cafe Laguna. Another coffee shop chain from Cebu is set to conquer Iloilo. They are located at the Upper Ground Level of SM City Iloilo beside the newly renovated David’s Tea House, fronting the soon to open People Are People Boutique. Website: www.cafelaguna.com

Goldilocks. Goldilocks have several kiosks in SM City Iloilo but yet to have a full service foodshop. But with the exit of Iloilo Krystal Ice Halo Halo in SM City they took over the lucrative slot. Goldilocks Bakeshop and Foodshop soon to open at SM City Iloilo.
