UP Jazz Ensemble and Entwined Voices in Parangal 2009

March 27, 2009 – The University of the Philippines (UP) Jazz Ensemble and Entwined Voices performed at the UP Visayas, Iloilo City Campus Auditorium. They came all the way from UP Diliman. It was a tribute concert for the UP graduates of 2009 dubbed as “Parangal 2009”. It was a very mind blowing performance at that night. You can really feel that jazz is just around the corner as they sing. The Auditorium was filled in its full capacity and you can see the interest of the Ilonggos to Jazz. The spectators were the graduates, their families and friends. They could not resist but to give the performers an applause in each piece they do on stage.  The group  also made a little narration about the history of jazz. UP Jazz Ensemble is a popular jazz group of the University of the Philippines established in 1977 in Diliman. It contributed much to widened the appreciation of jazz music in the Philippines through various perfomances. They play the music of popular jazz musicians like Sammy Nestico, George Gershwin, and Count Basie and those of contemporary composers such as Bob James, Maurice White, Tom Scott, Bob Mintzer and many others. UP had several performing troupes that includes the Madrigal Singers, UP Symphonic Band and others. The other performer for the “Parangal 2009” was the Entwined Voices that also gave a very intense and amazing performance. They are composed of several singers that has a specific voice and note to sing. They are just being accompanied by a keyboardist to follow though the songs. In the final set the Entwined Voices joined the UP Jazz Ensemble in a very refreshing Jazz song.
